AUGUST 2009
Several members of the Water Committee have attended three of the planning commission's meetings to encourage two actions: one, to add wording to the town plan that will protect town ground water and two, to begin writing up the proposal to the state to have East Montpelier's ground water mapped.
Carolyn Shapiro and Delia Robinson, members of the Water Committee, created the painting on the left, as a mural in Montpelier City Hall. Click here for a larger version to see how it looks in place. Better yet, go into City Hall, and see the painting itself and an accompaning exibit in the display cases. City Hall. It surrounds the water fountain, showing where the municipal water comes from, and how it gets to the people of Montpelier.

MISSION STATEMENT:
The Community Groundwater Study Group is dedicated to conserving groundwater resources as a public trust of Central Vermont, thereby protecting the health and safety of the region’s residents and eco-systems. To that end, the Community Groundwater Study Group researches issues relating to groundwater and public trust, educates its members, elected officials and the public regarding these matters, and advocates for sustainable use of our water resources.
GROUP HISTORY:
East Montpelier’s 2008 Town Meeting approved a resolution imposing a three year moratorium on large withdrawals of water. The stated purpose of the moratorium is to allow citizens adequate time to gather information regarding the impact of water withdrawals on citizens and natural resources. The Community Groundwater Study Group was formed to gather that information, focusing on East Montpelier and the wider community of Central Vermont.
The group meets regularly, all are welcome. To receive notice of meetings, ask questions, or make suggestions, please contact us. |
